Briefing on the Code of Practice for Program Accreditation (COPPA)

A briefing on the Code of Practice for Program Accreditation (COPPA) was conducted by QA department on 13 November 2015. This briefing provided an overview of COPPA and its nine evaluation areas. Participants were briefed on MQA application and accreditation process. This session also aims to create an awareness of participants on the international and national acreditation standards. Therefore, the session was very engaging in discussing good practices for monitoring, reviewing and continually improving institutional and department quality.


 

QA Seminar

As part of the preparations for becoming a University College, a quality assurance seminar was held in KDU Penang on 25 September 2015. The invited speaker was Assoc. Prof. Rosmawati Abdul Halim, Head of the Self-Review and Audit unit of UiTM’s Institute of Quality and Knowledge Advancement (InQKA).

Associate Professor Rosmawati shared with us UiTM’s quality assurance journey from the time it was decided that all faculties and campuses in UiTM should obtain the ISO 9001 certification for teaching and learning, to the time when the decision was taken to terminate the ISO 9001:2008 certification, through to today as UiTM aims for self-accreditation status.

Among those attending the seminar was the Principal of KDU Penang, Dr Chong Beng Keok. Associate Professor Rosmawati stressed the importance of leadership, saying that employees are more willing to commit and work towards common quality goals when their leaders show a similar commitment.
Overall, the seminar was well-attended with representatives from academic as well as non-academic departments. The attendees were especially interested in learning about the challenges faced by InQKA in their quality journey and the steps that were taken to overcome those challenges. At the end of the seminar, Associate Professor Rosmawati was presented with a token of appreciation while the KDU Penang attendees left the seminar with a clearer idea of what lies ahead in the quest to maintain and improve quality standards after achieving University College status.


 

ISO 9001:2008 Recertification Audit by SIRIM (23/6/2014 – 24/6/2014)

Comments from SIRIM auditors on KDU Penang’s Quality Management System (QMS):

  • Documentation found adequate in ensuring the effective planning, operation and control of related processes.
  • The coverage of ISO internal audit was comprehensive and demonstrated the achievement of audit objectives.
  • The organization’s QMS is adequately maintained. The compliance level at core and support processes remains good.

To gain deeper understanding on the AACSB international accreditation standards and the importance of continuos quality improvement for management education, KDU Penang participated in the AACSB Business Accreditation seminar.

International QA Board Meeting (27/6/2013 – 28/6/2013)

KDU Penang set up the International Quality Assurance Board (IQAB) to provide advice on Quality Assurance and Enhancement in facilitating the college to become an internationally-recognised and self-sustaining entity. The first meeting was held on 27/6/2013.


ISO Process-Based Auditing Training (25/1/2013 and 30/1/2013)

Internal auditing is fundamental to all management system standards as it is the means to establish compliance, verify the suitability and effectiveness of the system. Staff are nominated to attend the training in order to gain an undertanding on the process-based auditing, on how to audit for effectiveness and compliance to the requirements of ISO 9001Quality Management System Standards.
